Seven years ago today, we lost a brilliant human, civil activist, hacker, and champion for knowledge freedom: Aaron Swartz. As we continue to see bad decisions the government is making around open access and internet & knowledge equality and freedom– coupled with the terrible practices of media and social media/tech giants, we have to take stands against them. In April of 2013, three months after Aaron’s death, I walked in protest of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act as well as SOPA (and later PIPA). We have to take every opportunity to protest, call senators, and talk to friends and family about the correct stances on these topics– and vote the bad decision makers out of office. If you haven’t seen it, watch the documentary on the story of Aaron’s life.
